Member, Council of Reference
Matthias Stiefel was the Chair of A Rocha’s International Trustees from July 1999 to October 2008, overseeing the period of rapid growth which saw A Rocha’s work spread from four to eighteen countries. He is President of the International Peacebuilding Alliance (Interpeace), an organisation that works with local partners in divided societies to build lasting peace. Matthias lives in Geneva and speaks fluent German, English, French and Portuguese. In the early 1970s he was a freelance journalist and consultant in Southeast Asia. In 1986 he resigned from employment with the UN to spend five years as a farmer on a traditional dry-land subsistence farm in the Algarve, motivated by the desire to gain practical field experience in development issues.
