Juliet VickeryJuliet Vickery is Head of International Research at the RSPB. She spent 11 years working for the BTO, focusing on farmland birds in Britain, particularly on researching the reasons for their decline and ways to stem and reverse the trends.  She now oversees projects such as the eradication of invasive species (mainly rats) on UK overseas territories, diagnosis of the causes of decline of rare or endangered species like Sociable Plover in Kazakhstan and vultures in Asia, and the survey and monitoring of biodiversity in Important Bird Areas worldwide.

A specialist in applied ornithology, her research interests have focused on behavioural ecology and bird conservation, particularly with respect to habitat change and management. Her fieldwork has included expeditions to Mexico, Columbia, Dominica, Henderson Is., Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Greenland.

She has served as a member of the Council and the Ornithological Affairs Committee of the British Ornithologists’ Union, as a Council member of the British Ecological Society and Flora and Fauna International. She has also been Guest Lecturer for the Edinburgh International Science Festival and the British Association for Advancement of Science. She was presented with the BOU Ibis award for ‘outstanding contribution to conservation’ in 2004.
