Racing for conservation

More than 70 cyclists participated in the Sokoke Forest MTB Challenge in Watamu, Kenya in May, raising over 750,000 Kenyan shillings to support the conservation of the globally important Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and give local children a secondary education through A Rocha Kenya’s ASSETS programme.

Beginning at Turtle Bay resort, the race snaked 63 km through sand, mangroves, escarpments, dense coastal forest and coconut plantations, finishing with an exciting photo finish.

Cycling legend David Kinjah took first prize for the second year running, despite starting two minutes behind the pack, with Thomas Kangangi and Geoffrey Langat coming in at a close second and third. Young riders joined in the excitement on the 15 km family Fun Day.

Colin Jackson, Director of A Rocha Kenya, is delighted that this year’s event was such a success, with competitors coming from around the country and as far as Uganda. ‘The funds generated will improve the lives of students around Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and thus contribute to the conservation of this globally important forest. A race such as this will also boost tourism in the area,’ he said.

The challenge was organized by A Rocha Kenya with generous support from Turtle Bay Beach Club, Ocean Sports Resort, Lordship Africa and NIC Bank, Watamu.
