Pembina Valley park to become five times bigger

A Rocha Canada’s Interpretive Centre in Manitoba is situated on an oak and aspen ridge overlooking Pembina Valley Provincial Park. The park – and the centre – were established through the vision and hard work of Henry and Elma Martens. Over a period of 30 years they purchased 440 acres of land and sold it to the Province, for a park, in 2001. Henry has been hard at work again, negotiating the sale of additional environmentally sensitive land to expand the park so that it will grow more than five-fold to a planned 2,310 acres. The extended park will reach the border of the USA, meeting the Tetrault Woods State Forest on the North Dakota border.

A Rocha’s spring raptor counts, conducted for ten years until 2014, have shown that the Pembina Valley is an important migration corridor: over 11,000 birds of prey, of sixteen species, were counted on their northward passage in spring 2014. It’s also important for its breeding birds and rare plants.
