Lake Bosomtwe declared a Biosphere Reserve

In March, Ghana’s only natural lake was declared a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Since 2012, A Rocha Ghana has been working to support the conservation of the lake’s wonderfully diverse wetland and forest habitats. Prosper Antwi-Boasiako, the Project Manager, says, ‘We are proud to be associated with the UNESCO funded project and process that led to the achievement of this important milestone. This is an opportunity to do more to conserve biodiversity and secure livelihoods for communities whose very existence depends on healthy ecosystems.’ A Rocha’s work included consultations with the lake-fringing communities, the formation of committees to oversee the management of natural resources, faunal surveys, forest restoration and the training of over 900 people in new livelihoods aimed at reducing over-dependence on fishing.
