Join in the Global Plastic Cleanup

We love people and places, but plastic pollution is hurting both.

A Rocha helps to restore marine and freshwater habitats, from their source to the sea. Local cleanups of rivers and lakes allow community members to take practical action to protect their environment and reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the sea. Cleaning up beaches helps to restore sandy habitats which are valuable for human and wildlife, such as the endangered turtles that nest at our cleanup sites in Kenya and the USA.

In 2018, A Rocha organizations in eight countries participated in our Global Plastic Cleanup, with 29 events taking place around the globe:

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, A Rocha Netherlands cleaned at 10 locations along their coast. In Kenya, participants cleaned up the beach in front of Mwamba, our field study centre on the edge of Watamu Marine National Park. Australian colleagues combined cleanups with citizen science – searching for nurdles, the pellets that form the raw materials for plastic products. And our new project in Florida, USA joined in with local cleanups, making contacts and new friends with conservation groups.

This year we have commitments from A Rocha organizations in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Oceania who will participate in the International Coastal Cleanup on 20-22 September.
