Climate Stewards launches footprintr.me
When it comes to carbon footprints, how am I doing against the UK average? If I want to cut my carbon footprint, what are the quick wins? Eating less meat or holidaying at home? Changing the lightbulbs or buying an electric car? Recycling everything or getting an allotment?
The Climate Stewards motto is ‘reduce what you can and offset the rest’. Our new personal carbon calculator footprintr.me helps you work out your total carbon footprint and see where the biggest savings could be made. You’ll be asked about your travel, your household bills, how much meat you eat and how much you recycle. Then – and this is the fun bit! – you are asked to decide whether the rest of your lifestyle makes you more of a ‘Low Carbon Lisa’ or a ‘Carbon-Hungry Harry’, or someone in between.
footprintr.me is a great tool to help us take an honest look at our lives and our impact on the planet. How about using it with your small group at church (it’s part of EcoChurch’s Lifestyle section) or with your family? Once you have calculated your carbon footprint, you can choose to offset all or part of it with Climate Stewards. Your money supports small-scale forestry and cook-stove projects in Ghana, Kenya and Mexico; locking up carbon while bringing benefits to local communities and biodiversity.
A project like footprintr.me is never finished – we have used all the latest UK emissions data, and are constantly updating it. We’ll be adding more hints and tips for making carbon savings as we go along. We welcome your feedback!
