A Rocha Uganda overcomes setbacks at Lubigi

Restoration work at Lubigi Wetland in Uganda was finally given the go-ahead earlier this year. Invited by the Ministry of Water and Environment to participate in a mobilization meeting, A Rocha Uganda was tasked with raising public awareness of the restoration processes. And so they led a successful press campaign, involving radio and newspaper notices covering the eviction and restoration exercise.

But the last several months have been punctuated by political and bureaucratic setbacks for the A Rocha Uganda team. Lubigi Wetland is Uganda’s largest remaining wetland area and important for many waterbirds and birds of prey. But illegal encroachment, invasive vegetation and water pollution all impact on the local community and the wildlife it supports.

A Rocha Uganda is now seeking funds to partner with the government in this restoration, including the removal of alien vegetation and replanting in the wetland. Hope has come to the forefront of the campaign once again and A Rocha Uganda’s patience and tenacity has been rewarded.
