A Rocha Canada celebrates a magnificent gift
June 2017 developments: A Rocha Canada raises a barn
Since 2010, A Rocha has had an annual lease on its base, Brooksdale, in British Columbia, near the USA border. Now the Neufeld family has given the three beautiful heritage buildings and 18 acres to A Rocha, a gift valued at over 4 million Canadian dollars! The land includes garden plots, a substantial patch of forest and a portion of the Little Campbell River which is the most productive salmon-bearing stream of its size in the Lower Mainland.
The team has three main areas of focus here: conservation science, environmental education and sustainable agriculture. Already, in the last five years, they have studied a wide range of species and habitats, hosted 10,000 students and grown 50 tons of veggies. David Anderson, Centre Director, says, ‘Being on title means we’re well established to serve the wider communities around us for decades to come, and we’re here for the long haul.’
A Rocha Canada is now working to raise $450,000 to renovate the 1932 barn and turn it into a year-round education centre where students of all ages will be able to learn about environmental conservation. See Brooksdale in a short video (1.30 mins) and read the exciting story!
